Since the beginnings of the music industry, new technical standards were always a big challenge for the industry. It was the same with the rise of the cassette and the implementation of the compact disc. Since the internet has linked the world to a global network, changes are happening faster than before. The music industry was reluctant for a long time to changes and as a result, illegal file sharing systems raised. Legal alternatives did not work as good as expected, because the “music is for free”-idea had become manifest in the minds of the people. Since then the industry tried to convince the people with lawsuits, copy protection and education campaigns. In the last years more and more legal providers appeared on the market and people are willing to pay for downloads again. Beside the digital distribution there are also new ways of marketing in the music industry, dealing in all divisions of the marketing mix. The music-DVD is an innovative promising new medium. Ring tones and mobile marketing are discussed topics. Price-political actions and various promotional ways of marketing like viral marketing, direct mailing and marketing concerning online communities will be discussed in the theses. Aim of the theses is, to describe the surrounding of the music industry and to describe the new ways of marketing and distribution in the music business. The empiric part of the theses will check the consumer acceptance concerning these topics and will answer the question, if there is a change of the percipience of music and a strengthened use of music.
