The market for drugs is in a dramatic change: On the basis of economical and political developments, demographic redistribution and the increasing value change in the society the pharmaceutical industry is confronted with a promising as well as risky initial situation. One approach is the intensified orientation of the marketing and communication strategies towards the market conditions and the needs of the customers. While previous efforts were directed exclusively to doctors, hospitals, wholesalers and druggists, the patient, so the primary end user of (ethical) drugs, now advances to the central target group of the pharmaceutical communication mix. ‘Direct-to-consumer’ communciation strategies meet this trend and are the central issue of the diploma on hand. The scientific question is: Which ‘direct-to-consumer’ communciation measures are set by the pharmaceutical companies and for what reasons and how are these measures evalueted by patients with chronic illnesses?
