The object of this thesis is to find out whether fear is employed in Austria as a political means of influencing the formation of opinions in the public. I am aiming to answer this question by concentrating on a concrete, political issue from the recent past: the question of the accession of Turkey to the European Union in 2004 caused upheaval in politics and the media and had a considerable emotional impact on the public. Since the final decision of the matter is not to be expected until after 2014, this thesis touches upon the past as well as the future. Interviews with leading representatives of the Austrian political parties, the media and various organisations, together with continuous analysis of newspaper coverage, have yielded a sufficiently clear result. For the effective employment of fear as strategy there has to be a certain receptive atmosphere among the public: studies and surveys have suggested that such an atmosphere of negativity exists concerning the accession of Turkey, particularly in Austria and Germany. A crucial aspect of communication in politics and the media is the generation of emotion in the people; the topics of immigration, Islam, crime, fundamentalism and terrorism, emotionally charged issues in themselves, have been brought into the debate by both sides. Through these interviews, analyses and extensive research I have reached the conclusion that fear is being used as a means of political manipulation in Austria. Many of the people I interviewed did not deny this. The issue of Turkey’s accession to the EU and its representation proved to be a singularly interesting research topic – a political question that has been, and still is, emotionally charged for both sides. Finally, I want to emphasise that this thesis aims to take a balanced and objective view of all aspects of the issue at hand and does not favour any position, political party, or opinion. http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:1019 application/pdf 5030961 bytes Text Angst in den Medien - Politik, Macht, Manipulation
