The representation of Austrian Films is very weak. 97 % of films shown in Austria come from foreign countries – most of them are Hollywood-productions. Films from the USA are very successful because US-American film producers treat film as economic goods. A film has to please the audience to be a Box-Office-Hit. That’s the reason why Millions of Dollars are spent in marketing long before the film production starts. To get the audience into the cinema, you have to know what they want. However, Austrian film producers tend to put an emphasis on the artistic value of a film and nearly forget about the promotion of it. Unfortunately, film marketing is not that common than in the USA because of the missing budget and due to the missing know-how. Another point is that film makers in Hollywood tend to tell a story in a rather comprehensible way than Austrian film akers do. There should be more co-productions with foreign countries and TV-stations in Austria and abroad to strengthen the Austrian film. To make the Austrian film successful you also have to think about the audience and to produce a film they like you have to know what they want. Another point is to know the criterions of successful films such as film genres, stars, film budget, publicity, reviews and success at film festivals as well as propaganda from friends. In future digital cinema and the connection of different kinds of media will be very important for film marketing. Film marketing has to support a film before, whilst and after the film production to be a Box Office Hit.
