Service providers like cable system operators and telecommunications enterprises expect that "Triple Play" services will lead to an increase in the Average Revenue per User (ARPU) for broadband services. "Triple Play" makes the simultaneous use of video-, voice and data services on the same broadband internet connection possible. There are some requirements for the provider’s network infrastructure and for the Local Loop to the customer. Availability and the quality of the services must be ensured in the network of the provider and in the home network of the customer. Hence the equipment which is used in the home network and the functions included are also very important. With these network-based services, however, a provider is in competition with the widespread digital TV transmission techniques and thus with the possibility of using home entertainment systems and media center PCs. This paper gives an overview of "Triple Play" services, of substantial transmission techniques in the Local Loop and the equipment that can be used by the customer in the home network. At the beginning video-, voice and data services are examined, as are the protocols that are possible for these services. A short introduction to the digital transmission of TV services with Digital Video Broadcasting is followed by television over the Internet Protocol (IP-TV) and possible functions for IP-TV. The next chapter focuses on the digital transmission of Voice over IP (VoIP). Protocols for VoIP and their application types are shown. Finally, the paper will discuss the use of the internet for data services by the Multi Service Operator (MSO). The substantial access techniques in the Local Loop are Cable, ADSL and Fiber to the Home (FTTH). The function and characteristics of these three techniques will be explained, whereby Ethernet is examined as a transmission protocol in the Local Loop. To guarantee high availability of the "Triple Play" services at the customer’s home, the transmission of the services in the home network and the functions of the equipment used within the home network are very important. Possible implementations of the home network and the necessary functions of the equipment will be pointed out in the last section of the paper.
