de
George Lucas’ Star Wars saga set new standards in motion picture sound, design as well as technology. By analysing the Star Wars soundtrack, this paper should impart extended knowledge about motion picture sound design and technology in general. This paper only emphasises on sound effects and dialogue, not music. For readers, who are interested in the music of Star Wars, I suggest reading „May the force be with you – die Space-Opera Star Wars“ by Martina Ruch, graduate of the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Graz. Chapter 1 explains the necessary production phases required to produce motion picture sound. Chapter 2 deals with multi-channel sound in general and explains Star Wars’ role in multi-channel sound. In chapter 3 the reader is given an impression on the life and working habits of the most important people involved in the creation of the Star Wars soundtrack. Finally, chapter 4 analyses the Star Wars soundtrack with given examples.
