Telekommunikation und Medien, Dipl.-Arb., 2006 The thesis at hand focuses on the use of storyboard software in today’s movie and advertising productions. Whereas drawn storyboards have proven to be an invaluable help in the production process, storyboard software is still rarely applied. Therefore the research concentrates on following aspects: First, it tires to clarify whether or not storyboard software can substitute common storyboarding practices. Second, it focuses on the demand for corresponding applications in the professional movie and advertising industry and third, enquires the conditions for its usage. In order to achieve results, it was essential to first gain knowledge about the nature of storyboards and storyboard software. Then their features could be summarised and compared. For the software to be recognised as a substitute for hand drawn graphics it was further necessary to test its power of representation. Hence an existing storyboard was taken and recreated with its digital counterpart. A survey with six filmmakers and one storyboard artist aimed to clarify the need and requests for storyboard software. This approach has led to following results: The features of storyboard software are sufficient to produce adequate storyboards. Only where detail and light are of great importance within the production process, the use of software is inappropriate. Though the business does need previsualisation techniques for solving technical problems, storyboard software is rather recognised as worthy complement than as a substitute for common storyboards. Advertising productions in particular seem to dismiss its use, since the digital outcome is too lax on detail and style. In order to meet the demands of the interviewees, storyboard software needs to be user friendly and inexpensive. Additionally, the application should come with a sufficient number of objects to be placed on the set. Training workshops would complete the package. http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:1750 application/pdf 10306357 bytes Text Das neue Storyboard
