The focus of this thesis is the upcoming new WLAN Standard 802.11s. At first this thesis takes a closer look at the development of this IEEE Standard. Open questions and areas which have not been touched by a broader audience are going to be addressed. The next section of this work displays the basic functions of 802.11s. For example 802.11s is using a Layer 2 Routing protocol called HWMP and an access method called EDCA. The reader of this thesis will get an inside of the 802.11s framework and all its components and network protocols. Additionally the whole security concept of 802.11s will be discussed. In the experimental section a simulation with OPnet Modeler discusses the weaknesses of 802.11s. Therefore HWMP is modeled into the OPnet modeler and then several simulated runs give an indication where the framework has space for improvement. The following part demonstrates the shortcomings of HWMP in the current state. Another area of interest is the delay, throughput and routing traffic between mesh points. Finally a discussion of the results for the experimental part will follow that indicate where weak spots can be found.
