This thesis deals with the past inventions and current development in the area of motion picture lighting. Particular attention is paid to the possibilities of various lighting products and the influence on the different lighting styles. The first part of the paper explains the basics of light, why it is needed and how it can be used the archive certain effects. The next section covers the historical development, starting with the glass-enclosed rooftop studios. Both the beginning of the Hollywood cinema and the German expressionist cinema are covered by this thesis. The light and asthetics of important movies from the early period, like some of the work of D.W. Griffith, DeMille or Charlie Chaplin are analyzed. Two German movies from the 1920th, the film “Nosferatu” by F.W. Murnau and “M-Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder” by Fritz Lang are used to describe the style of the German expressionist film. The next chapter is about the evolution of color in film and the lighting characteristics of early color-movies. Based on the chapter of the German expressionist cinema follows a chapter about the style of the American Film noir. At the end of the historical analyses the light of the film “Citizen Kane” by Orson Welles is discussed. This well-known movie is said to be the best of all times. The second part of the thesis deals with modern film lights, which are still used today. in addition to the lighting technology there is a part about the digital camera technic and its advantages or disadvantages for the film light. The two largest chapters of this part deal with the current and future lighting systems. Specifically the new LED technology and the Cine Reflect Lighting system are addressed. The paper concludes with a personal assessment and tries to evaluate the consequences for both the director and the director of photography. http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:1958 application/pdf 1734965 bytes Entwicklung und Zukunft des Filmlichts Text
