The present master’s thesis explores the value-added process of crowd-creation and its benefits for the creative industry. The underlying question of this project was “What is the essence of a perfect story?” and the premise was to find an appropriate answer by asking as many people as possible for their version of a perfect story. Therefore an online survey tool, www.storytelling-experiment.com, was created, with which one could create any story in detail. The results of this experiment then co-produced the storyline of a 2D animated, crowd-created short film, which should, furthermore, help investigate the following research topic: “Mass-media suggests a storytelling dictation, whose implicit, narrative norms are not in the interest of the mass.” After careful evaluation, the results did not follow expectations and the short finally dealt with coming of age issues and societal challenges. As the mass wished for a classical narration, f.e. linear chronology and a first-person-perspective, the first hypothesis “Acceptance rises with the use of known, narrational patterns” was verified. Verification was possible, as a result to the representative nature of the sample; 531 people participated in the storytelling experiment and therefore the necessary sample of 471 participants was over-achieved. The second hypothesis, “As soon as the recipient is allowed to participate in the value-added process, the final product reaches outstanding awareness at the expense of objective evaluation”, had to be falsified, due to the lack of critical responses and an under-average reach of 1,542 views in total (youtube and vimeo combined). The final two statements of this master’s thesis relate to the use of crowd-creation: First, crowd-creation allows a clear insight into the fears, demands and wishes of the mass, which should, in the best case, equal the desired target group. Secondly, and this is the concluding message of the master’s thesis, the mass can not replace the creatives. The mass does not have the ability to immerse into fictional character’s minds and storylines and is not able to lead the way into unknown territory. The mass follows the known, the mass replicates, the mass can not take over the tasks of a truly creative.
