Through observations in everyday life, it is assumed that the maximum utilization of elevator systems, according to the manufacturer is not reached. The number of people who are staying at the same time in an elevator car is determined by various factors such as personal well-being, the entrained luggage and the selection of the position in the elevator. The aim of this work is to find out the actual utilization rate and possible reasons for the failure to achieve the manufacturer's specifications. In spring and summer 2016 elevator rides in Austria were documented at selected locations in traffic systems for data acquisition. The data were analysed and processed in relation to the utilization rate, position in the lift and space requirements per person. The evaluations have shown that a personal capacity greater than 70 % could not be reached. The most common area is the center of the elevator car, but the most common location of a person seen from the door is the middle left one. The actual required space is higher in comparison to the space required per person in the manufacturer's instructions.
