This thesis details the documentation of the production process to a piece of music specifically written by the author as a part of this thesis, trying to make the most of what 5.1 Surround has to offer. The musical genre falls into guitar driven progressive rock/metal in the vein of the works of Joe Satriani and John Petrucci. The documentation is not a technically orientated step by step guide, but rather a depiction of the creative process itself. The project files can be found on the DVD to this thesis, and enable taking a look at all the small technicalities, plugins, settings etc. The thesis explains and compares different audio formats used to get surround music out into the world. The theme transitions into taking a closer look at the current and past state of surround music. The history of DVD-A and SACD, the two biggest contenders in the field of surround music, sheds light on how the format as a whole has developed and where it’s at right now. The final big topic is sound quality of high resolution audio formats. Along the guidelines of how to make the most out of digital music playback and especially surround playback on a Home Theater PC system, the topic is brought closer to the reader, before the next chapter is fully dedicated to lifting some myths behind high resolution audio by explaining theoretical and psycho-acoustical aspects and examining some research work based on the matter at hand. The thesis comes to an end, by pointing out some musical highlights in the field of surround audio. The titles mentioned were instrumental in the author’s own creative process and by all means are intended as a stepping stone for anyone interested into venturing into surround music themselves. http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:2395 application/pdf 2530574 bytes Text Surround Music
