Cyber-physical systems are enabling technologies to connect physical objects such as production machines with the virtual world. In smart factories those systems will provide useful data to support humans in their role as decision makers. The amount of data will increase significantly when lots of machines are connected. This probably causes an information overload for humans. My work will focus on how data can be filtered to prevent such an information overload. The goal of my work is to develop a software prototype which can be integrated in cyber-physical systems and is able to provide employees of smart factories with useful machine information that targets their area of activity. The prototype is based on the mobile task collaboration software “Herculess”. “Herculess” is a service to make human asset management more efficient. It is an application which learns with user input and gives useful suggestions to save time. Finally, the prototype should build the technological base to develop a specific version of “Herculess” for the Industry 4.0. Methodically, a literature research is applied to describe the concept of smart factories and define requirements for the prototype. Furthermore, a quantitative survey in the manufacturing area is applied to define specific requirements for the prototype. In this work concepts for the generation of information based on machine data, the integration of software in cyber-physical systems with focus on network protocols and the filtering of information to prevent an information overload for humans are created. Finally, an evaluation of the prototype is made to measure how efficient information overload can be reduced. This work shows that information about the remaining time of an order, performance data of a machine and upcoming maintenance work are the most useful types of information for people working in the manufacturing area. The evaluation of the prototype shows, that information overload can be reduced significantly by using similarity measure algorithms. The best results were achieved by using the cosine similarity algorithm. Using this algorithm, the total amount of delivered information can be reduced by up to 76%. Furthermore, the amount of useless information can be reduced by up to 96,6%.
