These days, conventional online advertising in the form of Display Ads must face some challenges; for example, the high dislike of the consumers towards online banners or the increasing number of AdBlocker users. Innovative, young forms of advertising, such as Native Advertising, seem to withstand these threats. Native ads fit into the editorial environment of their carrier medium in terms of design and functionality, appear less obtrusive and should be able to achieve a higher advertising effect than Display Ads. This assumption is investigated in the present empirical study. Based on a quantitative survey of female passersby, the advertising effect of Native Ads and static Display Ads is examined by means of a test-website and a standardized questionnaire. A Native Ad and a static Display Ad of two fictional cosmetic brands are integrated into the test-website and are shown to the participants. Subsequently, the constructs relevant to the advertising effect are collected. The aim is to answer the following question: "How does the advertising effect of Native Ads and static Display Ads in the cosmetics segment differ towards women?" The results of the study show that there is a difference between the performance of Native Ads and static Display Ads. Static Display Ads tend to achieve higher recall values than Native Ads. However, the affective evaluation of Native Ads is significantly higher than the assessment of static Display Ads. Yet, an exposal of the advertising intent of Native Ads will result in a worse affective evaluation of the ad.
