SCHLÜSSELWÖRTER: Übergewicht, Fettleibigkeit, Adipositas, Bewegung, mobile Technologien, Fitness-Apps Usage of fitness app by obese patients Introduction: Obesity and adipositas are presenting a worldwide health problem; In recent decades, the number of affected persons has steadily increased. For the body, this not only means difficulties due to a lot of weight, obesity is also a risk factor for many other complaints and diseases, such as respiratory, cardiac and circulatory problems, cancer and diabetes. Regular exercising and sports play an important role in the prevention and treatment of obesity. With the technical advances in the past years, many fitness programs have been established in the form of applications for smartphones and other mobile devices on the market. Because the previously available fitness and exercise apps are mainly designed for healthy people and not specifically for people with obesity, it would be interesting to find out whether there are different wishes and requirements by obese versus non-obese persons for an app, in order to be able to better tailor the app. Methods: An online questionnaire was used to collect data from two groups. These data were subsequently compared with one another and analyzed in terms of content. The questionnaire provided information on the use of fitness and exercise apps, as well as opinions on various possible features that such an app may contain. Results: The hypothesis, that there is a difference between the wishes and requirements to a fitness or exercise app of obese and non-obese persons was confirmed. These differences are related to the preferences of sports, to the social impact - where obese people increasingly wanted to get in contact with other users of the app - and in the area of motivation, where it was striking that obese people - unlike the non-obese - prefered to do sports alone rather than together. Conclusion: Further research can be made on the information obtained, which can deliver even more specific wishes and requirements of obese people to such apps. In the end, these results can be used to adapt fitness apps to these differences to promote their increased usability and to take advantage of this important opportunity to work against overweight.
