Motivation in physical therapy in overweight and obese patients Introduction: The number of obese people is constantly rising. Having a BMI, which is over the standard value, increases the risk for cardiovascular diseases, and can also lead to problems which are important in context of physical therapy such as arthrosis or flatfoot. Especially due to a sedentary lifestyle of overweight persons it comes to damages of the musculoskeletal system, which in turn leads in visiting physiotherapists. This means that physiotherapists are more and more confronted with such patients in their daily working life. Now there is the question how it is possible to motivate these persons to a more active lifestyle just as to a more active form of therapy and to more compliance. There are different concepts to strengthen someone’s motivation, above all Deci and Ryan’s self-determination theory. Motivation in a physiotherapeutic context is nearly unexplored, not least because motivation supporting actions are almost not used in practice. Nevertheless, the necessity of such actions could already be proved. The aim of this study is to identify the motives for physical activity of overweight women and to figure out if it is possible to manipulate these motives through a preventive physiotherapeutic program, which is based on self-determination theory. Methods: For this purpose there was organized a preventive physical activity program over six weeks for overweight women, who were recruited through WeightWatchers®. Motivation was assessed before and after the program using two questionnaires. Results: SSK-index rose from an average value of 4,2 to 5,4 (p=0,104), as well as sportenjoyment from 29,8 to 32,8 (p=0,144). Conclusion: This study could show that it is possible to influence the motivation of overweight women through a preventive six weeks lasting physical activity program positive. Therefore it is possible to reason that knowledge of motivational processes is important for physical therapy. Physical therapists are in an ideal position, as their role as preventers, promoters and rehabilitators, exert influence on patient’s activity level as well as on adherence. http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:2751 application/pdf 1154822 bytes Motivation in der Physiotherapie bei übergewichtigen und adipösen Personen Text
