This paper examines the connection between storytelling and advertising based on the commercial use of narrative elements. It specialises on the description and explanation of archetypes as well as subjects and figures from fairytales and myths. The aim of this study is to indicate the importance of storytelling for advertising. In addition to that, the relevance of the underlying narrative elements will be shown. Therefore, the archetypes will be connected with the subjects and figures from fairy tales and with the narrative elements that are used for advertising purposes. Regarding this topic, a comparison between the advertisements for beauty and fashion products and the advertisements for food products will be drawn in order to find out if an industry-specific use of archetypes exists within advertising. Furthermore, it will be examined which specific archetypes are used as well as if they are used individually or in a combined way in order to address Austrian women. On this basis, a quantitative content analysis is conducted in order to answer the question of research: ‘Which archetypes are used by specific industries in order to make a promotional approach to women?’ All in all, over a period from January to June 2015, a total of 207 advertisements for beauty, fashion and food products of thirteen issues of the magazine WOMAN will be analyzed with regard to the communication of archetypes. In order to achieve important results the software package SPSS Statistics version 23 will be used for statistical analysis. The main findings are that the following 9 archetypes Caregiver, Creator, Explorer, Hero, Innocent, Jester, Lover, Magician and Regular Guy/Gal are used in order to make a promotional approach to women. Within the food industry the archetypes Caregiver and Regular Guy/Gal are communicated with the highest frequency of occurrence, which means that they are of high importance to the food industry. In contrast to that, the most frequently used and therefore the most important archetypes with regard to the beauty-/fashion industry are the Lover and the Magician.
