Companies are increasingly confronted with the issue of how the use of social software applications in the field of internal communication makes sense. This master thesis focuses on the question whether the use of social software applications improves the communication within a company. This is followed by the question of how and under which circumstances social software applications contribute to an improvement. One finding which was gained through qualitative analysis of literature is that social software applications can contribute to an improvement of internal communication. In addition, factors that should be considered in the introductory phase of a social software application could be identified. They contribute significantly to a successful use of a social software application even beyond the introductory phase. For the empirical part, expert interviews according to a manual were conducted with managers of Austrian companies which implemented a social software application successfully. These interviews are analyzed with the aid of the qualitative content analysis by Mayring. In addition to the factors named in the literature, other significant factors such as “adaption phase”, “help by questions”, “integration into everyday business”, “training of new employees”, “content as an use stimulation” etc could be identified.
