The aim of the following Master Thesis is to analyse and understand the decision-making process consumers undergo in regard to biological food products, more specifically the importance of information sources listed which include the product quality and product content. Moreover, this Thesis will also focus on analysing the role and importance of different cachets (labels) and rating platforms (online Forums) Since 2015, Austria is listed as one of Europe’s largest producers and industry holders of biological food. As they have managed to move biological products from niche to mass markets of consumers. As a consequence of this rapid Bio-Boom, the need for statutory rules that improve high ecological quality of biological products increased. With the support of national cachets, which exist throughout the EU, ensure consumers that the product is of high ecological quality. However, many people are still reserved in buying biological products due to their lack of trust in labels, cachets and requirements that are meant to be met by biological businesses and companies. In order to establish an opinion, many of the younger generations are subject to consulting the Internet instead of the food packaging labels, in order to inform themselves about product quality and composition. They obtain their information and form their opinion based on the other voices and opinions of online forums, which influence the their ultimate buying process. Even though young families are among the highest buying and one of the stronger purchasing powers within the biological food industry, little is still known about their buying decision-making process. With this base, this Master Thesis aims to attend to the matter of labels and online rating platforms (online forums) which are used by consumers of biological products, that are aged between 30-45. With the help of a theoretically structured analysis of literature and an empirical examination, it will ultimately be determined whether recommendations and product ratings on online forums or cachets (labels) play a decisive role for a purchase of a product.
