The present diploma thesis deals with the realization and conception of a measuring system to gain control of drafting violations in triathlon competitions. This thesis is the first step of a big research project which intends the practical application of a control system. After an initial phase of theoretical and practical investigations, there will be a testing phase. Successful test implementations could lead to serial productions and application in Austrian competitions. Triathlon needs a stricter and more precise control of the drafting violations. The reasons to initiate this ban are due to power saving issues, but not only. If cyclists ride in a tightly packed group they can reduce their overall wind resistance. Thereby, everyone except the first cyclist can profit from the power saving. Riding in tightly packed groups is forbidden and very unfair. Nevertheless, the more important reason for initiating the drafting ban is to ensure a safety distance between the cyclists. In triathlons, competitors often use so-called aerobars, tri spoke wheels and other bike parts that can be very dangerous to life in case of accidents. Therefore, there is a need of controlling these safety distances between the cyclists. In practice, this is done by checking and supervising the drafting issues, but it cannot be controlled sufficiently. Therefore, there is a need for a comprehensive and fair control system. The drafting ban is a security service of the ÖTRV. Thus, it is anchored in the regulations and prescribed. All operators have to observe and control these bans. At the moment this observation is done by mobile marshals. The new control system should support the existing system to gain more control of critical situations. The mobile marshals should be supported in order to make more consolidated decisions in case of violations. The aim of this thesis is to create a concept for the described control system. Thus, it’s important to know the actual situation and all requirements for a new system. These requirements have been ascertained in a meeting with the ÖTRV, represented by general secretary Herwig Grabner. The major task of this thesis is to determine all possible methods and technologies that are useful for this kind of measurement. Therefore, the physical drafting situation should be analyzed to find out how drafting issues can be measured or determined? Furthermore, some researches should be done on suitable methods of this kind of measurement. Thereby, it should be figured out which measuring methods fit for this application and why. Using the results of the researches some concept variations can be developed, that needs further investigations and considerations. The most difficult issues lie in the exactness of the measurements, and the amount of data connections in competitions with many athletes. To sum up the most potential concepts are illustrated and represented in the last chapter. Interrogation of Master Thesis „Is it possible to create a dynamic distance measurement system for triathlon competitions in order to gain control of drafting issues? Which technical methods and technologies can be used for it? And how could a practical and fitting concept look like?“ Triathlon; Wettkampf; Abstandsmessung; Sicherheitsabstand; Messsystem 1552151 AC08232755 2017-01-17T16:25:13.415Z 44 no 46 Thomas Günther 2010 application/pdf 1760239 http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:297 no yes 1 70
