o:3047 Unified Communications in Unternehmensnetzwerken de St. Pölten, FH-Stg. This Master thesis deals with the application of Unified Communications Systems in company networks. Unified Communications is the standardization of different communication media, as for example phone, e-mail, fax, audio and video or instant messaging, to a uniform communication system. The preconditions, the benefits as well as the costs for the application of Unified Communications in a company are explained. The expenses can be reduced, because single systems do not have to be serviced any more. Another advantage is that employees as well as business partners have access to information at any time and from any place by means of their preferred medium. Likewise, it is easier for customers to stay in contact with employees. Access control on information should be carried out by a rights system rather than by technical limitations. The contactability of the communication partner can be thereby improved and business deals can be arranged more efficiently. Many companies maintain a working infrastructure for their corporate communications. This should not necessarily be changed. When acquiring the Unified Communications software or the appropriate terminals, most companies do not want to invest in additional servers or network components. Unified Communications can use parts of the existing infrastructure so that a standardization of communication services is achieved. Recently, the number of manufacturers of Unified Communications Systems has been growing. The systems are either software- or hardware-based. This thesis deals with those aspects which have to be considered in order to be able to successfully implement a Unified Communications System in the company. In the course of the two research questions, initially a catalogue of criteria for the selection of Unified Communications Systems for the application in enterprises is compiled. Subsequently, possible scenarios of application of Unified Communication Services and the criteria to evaluate the implementation of Unified Communication Systems in enterprises, are worked out. Finally, a Unified Communications System is implemented in laboratory environment, taking into account the gained knowledge of this work.
