Violence and aggressive behavior of substance consuming clients is mostly difficult to deal with for the social care staff. Depending on the consumed substance different reactions are evoked. The clients‟ mental condition influences his propensity to violence. For this reason, it is important that the social care staff responds correctly in situations the client is aggressive and violent. For that purpose training in escalating situations for the social care staff is essential. The presented report concentrates on the special subject “violence among substance consuming clients”. If violent conflicts occur in addiction aid institutions social care staff needs to react in an appropriate way; and this can be very difficult. Showing the reasons for the difficulties and how to deal with the situation is part of this report. The first part of the report shows an overview on definitions, substance consuming and propensity to violence, the development of addiction aid institutions in Vienna and acting in escalating situations. Subsequently, the empirical part of the report presents the examination method, the approach and the result of investigation. The main question of investigation was: “How does the social care staff deal with violence among substance consuming clients?” Finally you can find a summary of the output and a conclusion for the practical experience.
