Tourism associations play an important role for tourist destinations. In addition to other tasks, they are responsible for marketing a region and thus take on the task of determining how successful or unsuccessful a region is. Tourism associations are therefore responsible for positioning the region in such a way, that it prevails over the competition and guests consciously choose a holiday in this region (cf. Freyer 2009, p. 82 f.). The following work deals with the tourism marketing of the tourism association "Innsbruck Tourism". The following research question will be investigated: To what extent does the positioning of the Innsbruck Tourist Board match the image of the guests in the Innsbruck area? Thus, this work compares the self-image (positioning of the tourism association) and the image of the city of Innsbruck (image of the guests). The empirical part of this work begins with a qualitative preliminary study, which aims to break down the positioning of the tourism association. To this end, the tourism association's advertising materials were subjected to a qualitative content analysis. By means of inductive category formation, ten thematic areas emerged which reflect the positioning of the city of Innsbruck (symbiosis of nature and city, symbiosis of modern and historical architecture, culture, sport, gastronomy, shopping, integration of holiday villages, urban characteristics, value-added services "Innsbruck Tourism", infrastructure). Subsequently, a focus group interview was conducted with people who are in direct or indirect contact with the tourism association's marketing department. The evaluation of the focus group confirmed the positioning topics. After deriving the hypotheses, the next step was to examine these positioning topics by means of a quantitative survey using quota selection. n= 200 guests, who have a stay of two nights in the city of Innsbruck incl. Igls, were interviewed. It emerged that the positioning topics defined at the outset were largely confirmed. Innsbruck is seen as an alpine-urban, sporty and likeable city with a variety of cultural offerings and modern and historical architecture, which is also easily accessible. At the same time Innsbruck offers a multitude of sports activities, shopping possibilities and also scores with its hospitality. Only the integration of the holiday villages shows that the guests only perceive the city of Innsbruck as a city and not in combination with the holiday villages. Thus, only less than half of those surveyed could imagine spending the next stay in one of the holiday villages. Based on the results, it becomes clear that the Innsbruck Tourism Association is positioning itself with the right topics. The marketing of the company should nevertheless consider the integration of the holiday villages, so that the region is perceived as a whole and there are no conflicts of interest between the individual holiday villages.
