The situation of people seeking asylum in Austria, is at the center of public interest. A one-sided and over-simplified representation of asylum seekers in the media causes fears, prejudices and a reserved attitude among the population. This diploma thesis analyzes the news coverage of three Austrian daily papers, displaying negative images of asylum seekers. Most of the articles talk about crime and psychosocial problems without giving information about basic asylum-related aspects. In addition a focus group discussion with members living in the direct neighbourhood of a home for people seeking asylum, confirms the prevailing prejudiced attitude towards asylum seekers with inaccurate pictures and an information deficit of fellow citizens regarding realistic facts and basic knowledge about asylum issues. Strategic and operational instruments of non-profit-marketing can assist in working against the lack of information and the one-sided representation of asylum seekers, particularly the work with and in the public. Public relations serve to create confidence, to pass reliable information and to reduce discriminating prejudices against clients of social organisations. Apart from the theoretical examination of social marketing, a group of concrete topics is generated from the results of the media analysis and the group discussion. These topics can be specified in the area of public relations, as an additional field of activity for social workers in institutions supporting asylum-seekers. http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:351 application/pdf 859389 bytes Text PR(0)ASYL
