Recent developments of the internet, which have very much been about the web 2.0 phenomena offer manifold opportunities to its users, especially in terms of actively participating in the customization of web-based contents. The classical production patterns of radio-, television-, and print media have hereby been overcome and consumers find themselves liberated from their previous passivity. The focus of creative processes is rather being shifted on individual consumers, who nowadays are able to take use of communicative instruments in order to expand their own medial presence. Publishing individually-created content has been remarkably facilitated for consumers through intuitive applications, which lower the production barrier that users sometimes tend to possess, and furthermore help in advancing innovative processes. An extraordinarily complex form of creation and implementation of individual content can be found in the virtual world of Second Life. The three-dimensional environment is provided by the Californian “Linden” – company, while the virtual world is completely designed by its users, offering various opportunities of interaction and communication. Beyond, the combination of this three-dimensional environment, an openness to basically any topic and creative freedom provides an appealing platform for entrepreneurial activities. The connection of the virtual world to actual real-life economic systems is established through an economic system with convertible currency, which allows both private users and entrepreneurs to transform virtual profits into real valuta. Many of the implemented means of communication also exhibit plenty of potential for entrepreneurial application of Second Life in terms of internal and external business communication. The main focus of this thesis will be on the development and use potential of Second Life on an enterpreneurial level. The analysis of the virtual world of Second Life will be carried into execution by examining both the internal strengths and weaknesses and the external opportunities and threats, concluding with a summary highlighting the most essential use potentials of Second Life for enterprises.
