This diploma thesis deals with international social work in the context of universalism and identity. It is focused on the north-south-development-cooperation of international social work with emphasis on the situation of women. Global challenges are described and the north-south-dialogue is questioned. The intention of the paper is to show those people working in development cooperation, how they can find ways of interacting in the context of universalism and identity, and how they can avoid, although there are universal social problems, losing the perspective of individual cultural aspects. Different kinds of theoretical methods allow to reflect international activities in a global context. Therefore it is embedded in a scientific body of theory of social work, development and culture. There are two accesses to the topic of universalism and identity. First from the view of the social work profession, from a historical viewpoint to a current position of the social work profession, and searching of a universal definition, where universal and identity tendencies are analysed. The second access is in the processing of universal and individual approaches to the interaction between client and social worker, where social workers have to find a link between the collective and the individual. An analysis of social work theories from the view of social work as a human rights profession leads to a discussion, if ethic values are universally accepted and implemented. Further social work theories present universal and individual key aspects, respectively a combination between both of them. Additionally, methods of the cultural studies are presented.
