Social work in the multiprofessional care for trauma patients after the example on the psychosocial acute team of Lower Austria [German: “PsychoSoziale AKUTteam NÖ”] A positioning The present paper examines a new and so far little explored area of activity in the field of social work, namely the profession of social work in the emergency care for traumatized individuals. In discussing this subject, the author refers to the psychosocial acute team of Lower Austria [German: “PsychoSoziale AKUTteam NÖ”]. Not only in Austria, but throughout all Europe this is the only institution where a multidisciplinary team supports traumatized persons according to the above mentioned conceptual framework on a large scale. In the first part, some basic information is provided about the field of social work and its relationship to related disciplines. Then, more specifically, action-guiding concepts of the profession regarding acute care for traumatized individuals are discussed. The theoretical discourse is continued in the examination of deployable intervention media and potentially applicable diagnostic instruments of social work in this sphere of action. The empirical part of the paper is based on a quantitative content analysis and focuses on the psychosocial emergency team of Lower Austria. It deals analytically with written documentation by the staff of the on-call group of the emergency team, which mainly consists of social work specialists. In the research part, the author argues the rationale of the selected method and describes both questions of interest and how the research has been carried out. The empirical results are set into relation with the theoretical findings of the first part and possible consequences for the institution are discussed. One objective of the present paper is to give an outline of the functions of social work in emergency care of trauma victims, especially in situations when the main aim is to stabilize individuals after traumatic events. For the author the present paper represents a cornerstone for further scientific research in this field of activity of social work. All interested readers are invited to further in-depth discussions.
