Man councels man The special quality of this counseling relationship from the perspective of the client using the example of men counseling The present paper targets gender-related aspects of men counseling from the perspective of the client. It refers to the experiences and perceptions of the users of men counseling. Method: Four predominant narrative, unstructured interviews with clients of men counseling were performed. The main method of analysis was the qualitative content analysis according to Philipp Mayring. Results: The interviewed men describe a specific atmosphere which helps to overcome inhibitions. The intimate environment which is connected with the special counseling situation “man to man” provides a protected zone for deconstructing maleness. They appreciate to be in the centre of reflections as a “whole man”, not to be reduced to a specific problem. Common aspects with the counselor (the male perception, an equitable language, but also similar attitudes) contribute to the circumstance that the interviewed men experience a profound appreciation in the counseling setting. The counselor is perceived as an experienced and reflected man. It is important for the interviewed men to communicate in a par with the counselor. Men want to find a professional in the counsel but also a “normal” man. The balancing act of the counselor between being an expert and being a “normal” man is essential for the quality of the counseling relationship and of the counseling process. It seems to have an important meaning for the men not to entitle the interaction between counselor and client as a counsel but as a dialogue, which is a fundamental precondition for a continuing counseling process. The setting “men counseling” makes it possible for the clients to be as they really are. Thus the men are more enabled to emerge as the man they want to be. If topics touch the man at heart or if his maleness is threatened the male counselor gains importance.
