Natural birth in comparison with Caesarean section – consequences for the relationship between mother and baby. „c-section on demand“ – the new trend… The backgroud of this topic for my thesis was on the one hand my private situation because I will give birth to my first baby in March 2008. On the other hand there is the fact of a growing amount on c-sections both in Austria and worldwide. It was interesting for me to analyse the reason for these growing figures in birth statistics, the effect of c-sections for mother and child, on the relationship between them and consequences for the binding between mother and child. In a fast changing world influenced by external factors in the form of new technologies, media, legal, economic and social aspects, it was fascinating for me to learn about the reasons for this development. In this thesis I deal with the medical facts of c-sections and also identify the ethical side of this topic. The new trend “c-section on demand” tends to result in disputes between different professions and the immediate consequences for the mother-child-relationship after a c-section are presented from differing viewpoints. For this reason it was very interesting for me to interview mothers who gave birth to their children in both ways – naturally and with c-section. Furthermore I wanted to question the role of welfare work in this new development. Will there be new possibilities for intervention or new fields of work for social workers in health care in the future?
