Streetwork with Youth and the Concept “Social Sphere Orientation” A Context Debate on Social Sphere Orientation The concept “Social Sphere Orientation” implies a psycho-social, pedagogical, sociological and economic approach to individual and collective social spheres for resource and strength orientated social work. It offers a method-based approach and organizational objectives for many action fields in social work. At present it is utilized above all for restructuring and reorganizing the support system for youth in many German cities. These reform processes serve as triggers for controversial debates about social sphere orientation – also among streetwork services. Streetwork, as a self-contained approach uses through outreach work social sphere orientation as a way of accessing the field and the life of the addressees to design adequate support for youth. In this context streetwork functions as an interface in the lives of the addressees and the support services for young people. Consequently it is an essential actor in social sphere work. In this master thesis the origin of both concepts and a social sphere orientation focussed on the social aspect is considered by putting into context both the social sphere approach and streetwork with youth. Based on the five principles of the concept “Social Sphere Orientation” the meaning, issues and areas of tension within social sphere orientated work of streetwork are pointed out and dealt with. An analysis from the point of view of an involved streetwork supplier of the social sphere orientated reform process of support services for young people in Berlin gives knowledge and experience about the effects and tendencies of the reform project. The master thesis is a contribution to the social sphere debates from the point of view of streetwork and attempts to establish social sphere orientation as a basic attitude in youth work. The reform process serves as an example for the practical implementation of the concept of “Social Sphere Orientation”.
