Pixar. The Disney movies of former times are loved by everyone, because of that this thesis tries to find out the secret behind their charm in relation to current animation films. It should also be declared which of the two species is more popular by today’s audience, the modern movies or the old classics. The introduction of the topic “Disney” is followed by the theoretical part, which consist of the following issues: dramatic structure (the three acts), character design (character types, complex characters), picture design (camera distance, camera angle, movement, color und lightning), montage (content and techniques), and sound design (voice, sounds, music, mixing, and relation to the picture). The knowledge will be used in the practical part to analyze Dumbo (1941), Cinderella (1950), The Emperor’s new Groove (2000) and Finding Nemo (2003) on the dramatic dimension and Sleeping Beauty (1959), The Jungle Book (1967), The Incredibles (2004) and Cars (2006) on the technical level. The preferences of the audience are evaluated by an online survey afterwards. The dramatic structure of the old classics uses a slow increase of suspense, it’s only focus lies on the main plot and its protagonist. This one is less complex than modern characters, but is characterized by its simplicity, credibility, positive nature and weakness, which stands in contrast to the dark world and the fearful antagonist and which let the happy end appear stronger. In terms of picture design modern animation movies tend to technical sophistication and realism, while the old classics have their strengths in atmospheric color design, painting-like backgrounds, and sparingly used close-ups. Also the montage has a slower pace, uses more fades and fewer technical effects, concerning the sound design, sound effects and atmospheric sounds are used rarely. One of the strengths of the old Disney classics is the music, on the one hand with the musical songs and on the other hand with the usage of leitmotifs and mickeymousing. The recognition and popularity of Walt Disney movies is very high, most of the people declare their selves as Disney Fans and also prefer the old ones (and also their animation style) to the new ones. The Lion King (1994) is the most popular film, Pixar’s favourite is Finding Nemo (2003) and The Jungle Book (1967) is the best old classic.
