Serving a prison sentence is a strain on every human being, especially on a person who is mentally ill. According to studies, 50% of prison inmates use drugs while in prison. About 10% of all prisoners take part in a programme that uses substitutes for drugs. The current paper is based on a study of the work done at the Justizanstalt Stein, Department 3, and will explore the factors that lead to stabilizing the condition of inmates with an opioid addiction. The paper is divided into three sections: 1) a theorectical section, 2) an empirical secion; and 3) a summary and anlysis of the results. The theorectical section contains an explanation of the terms that are important for understanding this paper. In this section, I will focus on the theories regarding how drug addictions develop, the effects of opioids and opioid addiction, multiple drug consumption (polydrug use), co-morbid conditions that accompany drug addictions, and therapies for opioid addictions. Other major points in the theoretical section are: the way in which prison affects the prisoner, a rough overview over the Austrian penal system, and the presentation of the conditions at the investigated prison, Justizanstalt Stein, Correctional facility Stein. The empirical part of this paper focuses on the methodology of the study and gives an overview of the area of study. It is through the evaluation of the high quality interviews conducted with inmates of Department V3 and their respective psychiatric documentation that the research question is answered. The final section of the paper summarizes the results of the study, and uses charts as part of the analysis of the data. http://phaidra.fhstp.ac.at/o:813 application/pdf 2006709 bytes Text Stabilisierende Faktoren der Suchterkrankung bei opioidabhängigen Strafgefangenen
