The following is the abstract of the Diploma Thesis in English. German Books have a potential market of 100 million people. Austrian publishing houses have the possibility to sell their books on the German market and to make a higher profit by doing so. However, they seem to concentrate their sales mainly on the Austrian market. An examination of the publishing companies, of the production of books and the laws shows that the Austrian publishing houses are companies of a smaller size or of a medium size. They adjust themselves to the Austrian market structures. The state supports the production of Austrian books, which has an effect on the production of books. To sell books on the German market means to know the participants, the structures and the trends of the market. The German book market is characterized by an overproduction of books and a highly economical concentration concerning the book shops and the publishing houses. Reading plays an essential part in the lives of the German population. Today reading is important for getting information and for the continuation of one´s education. To find out about the communication and sales activities of Austrian non-fiction books on the German market, two interviews have been conducted. The used means of communication of Austrian publishing houses to promote non-fiction books on the German market are not sufficient to draw the attention of the readers and the booksellers in Germany. An analysis of the marketing of books shows which market strategies and which marketing policy is suitable for the German book market. An interview has been conducted to investigate the advantages of e-marketing solutions. The additional use of e-marketing should help to withdraw from mass communication and to address to the clients in a direct, personal and efficient way.
