The Internet led to numerous changing processes in many branches (or fields). Also the music industry is extremely affected particularly by the use of mp3 and file-sharing. A downward tendency of the sales numbers of CDs can be noticed and the distribution via Internet originated. There is no doubt that Internet piracy and the illegal downloading of music has done a lot of damage. Nevertheless, the question needs to be asked how one could react to this phenomenon and which new and legal sales possibilities the Internet offers for music. The current business model of the music industry is still being used but nonetheless, it has to be completed by sophisticated strategies in the field of online sales. In Austria there are five providers for the legal acquisition of music via the Internet. Groups of companies are already intensively collaborating with these “new” providers and it will be tried to establish this sales model. The original purchase of physical sound storage media via music stores and the vending via the Internet do not exclude each other. Ideally, both sales models complement one another. The results will create new possibilities for the music companies. If one is responsive to music customers’ demands, a solid basis for new sales structures for music on the Internet will be offered.
