Substitution and change This thesis deals with the changes that can be observed with clients in opioid maintenance therapy and the reasons for these changes. The main sources used for this study were provided by the 2006 case documentations of the youth and drug counselling center CIRCLE, Wels. The special interest in this topic is rooted in the ambivalence perceived in the daily routine among addicts and social workers, supporters and opponents of drug substitution. In Austria an evaluation of the substitution treatment is still in its infancy, as is the approach to opioid maintenance treatment in general. Moreover, the sparse results are hardly comparable because of the different settings. The starting point for this analysis was the question which results (positive as well as negative) would emerge from the treatment within one year and to determine adequate intervention sets of social work in opioid maintenance treatment. The analysis starts with an outline of the background/setting of opioid maintenance therapy in general which is followed by a description of the special (pre)conditions in Wels. Moreover, an overview of the literature on the subject is provided. Finally, the systematization and interpretation of the case documentation are presented. The applied method is the content analysis according to Mayring as a first step, and the hermeneutic sequence analysis as a second step of data evaluation. The aim of this MA thesis is to find out which effects result from the opioid mainentance therapy and why this way of dealing with drug addiction represents a useful approach.
