In welchem Umfeld leben berufstätige Carer? Carers Career Measures to combine work and care The master thesis Carer’s Career – measures to combine work and care probably is the first research work in Austria that deals explicitly with the double burden of working Carers. Methods of quantity (questionnaires) as well as quality (single interviews and focus groups/group interviews with carers and business representatives) are used. The thesis shows, that carers are part of a micro system, a pattern of activities, roles and interpersonal relations and always under the influence of changes in society. Working Carers have their say. So we get information about shared characteristics of working cares, age segment, living areas and how their living situation completely changed by taking over care responsibilities. The interviewed carers report, that they feel personally and socially restricted by the duties of caring and that the need to be permanently available is an extraordinary burden for them. Combining caring with paid employment is feasible, but working carers do not get appropriate support from their employers to balance work and care. Concrete needs for better support from employers are expressed. Business representatives mainly don’t deal with the topic of balancing work and care. The interviewed business representatives think that Carers can mainly be supported by individual solution concepts. Essential aspects of the thesis are recommendations for politics, social partners, business - and staff representatives. It contains diagnostic proceedings, proposals for legal regulations, support models, financial incentive systems for concerns, investment suggestions for extending capacity, measures to sensitize, new consultation capacity inside and outside of companies as well as financing sources yet to acquire. Good Practice regulations from Great Britain and Germany as well as Good Practice methods like the nursing compass and nurse coaching are introduced. Finally possible offers from social work for working Carers are elaborated and there is a specific attention to the use of Care-Management and spatial orientation (Sozialraumorientierung).
